“Made With Real Meat” – Yeah Right!

We don’t watch a lot of tv, so last night I was shocked to see an ad for a well-known brand of dog food. It was a masterful work of marketing and showed lovely happy dogs bouncing around with their owners and tucking heartily into their food…… All the while the voiceover was using words like “with real meat”, “moist chewy chunks”, “protein rich”, “perfect balance of healthy ingredients”, etc

However, a look at the ingredients on the actual packaging for that brand tells a different story…… Not only does it contain harmful ingredients such as sugar, sorbitol (artificial sweetener), mendione (linked to liver problems and allergies), artificial colorings and flavorings…..

….but this food – “made with real beef” – contains only about 3% meat!!!

How can this be?

Well, believe it or not, the FDA in the US has stipulated a labeling law called the “3% With Rule”. It states that if an ingredient is labelled ‘with’ in a dog food the only requirement is that it must contain no less than 3% of that ingredient.

Looking at the other ingredients for this particular brand, it’s clear there isn’t much more than that…… It’s mainly a collection of grains, by-products….what one reviewer described as “an awful collection of agricultural waste and non-nutritious chemicals”.

Recently more than 550 health professionals and organizations in the US signed an open letter to McDonalds, imploring the fast food giant to stop marketing junk food to children. (You can read about it here

They didn’t go so far as to ask McDonalds to stop selling junk food to kids – it only asks them to stop aggressively advertising such foods to children.

Whether its food for humans or pets, we all have a choice. But if junk food is that choice we can’t expect not to develop significant health problems.

And with billions spent each year on ads designed to get us feeding our pets junk food, we can’t rely on fancy ads and marketing to help us make the right choices.

Have a good week.

Why is Pro Pac cheaper than other foods?

We’re often asked the question, “If Pro Pac is a higher grade food than Eukanuba, Hills Science, Pro Plan and other superpremium foods, why is it so much cheaper?”

When you look at the ingredients in Pro Pac you can see why it is significantly better – no by-products, low-grade or genetically-modified ingredients and ‘meal’ based for more actual meat protein. In fact the results Pro Pac produces in most animals is so much better that it’s not really fair to even compare it to the above brands.

Also, because Pro Pac is so much more concentrated, you need to feed less, so a bag goes a lot further.

Well there are three main reasons why Pro Pac is so much cheaper:

  1. The producer of Pro Pac, Midwestern Petfoods, is not a large multi-national corporation. They are privately owned and recognise they cannot compete with the massive advertising and marketing budgets of the big brands. So instead of putting money into advertising, they keep their costs lower and instead have chosen to grow through ‘word of mouth’. And they have grown – on average 30% a YEAR for the last decade around the world.
  2. Pro Pac works with small, independent distributors. Most of Pro Pac’s distributors in the 76 countries where the food is sold are small companies with lower costs. Pro Pac much prefers to work with people who are passionate about animal nutrition and are ‘hands on’ rather than with big companies. That includes us!
  3. We sell to you direct. Pro Pac doesn’t fit in with the political landscape of vets and pet shops so we have chosen to sell directly to the customer. It means we can offer it with free delivery at a significantly lower cost and ‘cut out the middle man’. (We do, however, have a couple of retail outlets where we subsidise heavily what would be the normal retail price).

So with Pro Pac representing a better food for your dog or cat at a lower price, it’s a win-win for everyone.

We hope you’ll give it a try to see the difference.

Chicken ‘Meal’ vs Chicken – what’s the difference and which one is better?

You may have heard this before but it never hurts to repeat it.

Most chicken-based dog foods list chicken or chicken ‘meal’ as the first ingredient. One has 300% more actual chicken than the other, so is a far superior form of protein. Do you know which one it is? The results may surprise you……

Chicken ‘meal’ is, quite simply DEHYDRATED chicken meat. No more, no less. It doesn’t contain any feet, necks, organs, etc – that’s chicken ‘by product’.

So chicken ‘meal’ contains a lot more actual chicken meat that straight ‘chicken-, up to 5 times more in fact.

The reason for this is in the way dried dog and cat food is made.

By law, the first ingredient on the label must be the first ingredient by weight. But there’s a catch that most petfood manufacturers don’t want you to know about…..

It is the weight BEFORE processing. If ‘chicken’ is the first ingredient (before processing), when the food is made, the water content will be removed by dehydrating. And as up to 80% of that chicken’s weight is water, the final food will only have about 20% of the weight it started with. So in the FINAL FOOD chicken will NOT be the main ingredient. In fact there won’t really be that much chicken left at all….

Chicken meal on the other hand has already had all of the water removed BEFORE it is put in the food for processing. If it is the first ingredient listed it will remain the main ingredient because it has already had the water removed.

You can see from this that a food based on chicken meal is much higher quality, because it has had up to 5 times the number of chickens used to make the food. Of course that adds significantly to the cost of production.

All Pro Pac formulas are based on chicken ‘meal’. It’s one of the reasons we get so many reports of dogs preferring it to other foods which aren’t meal based and why they do so well. They’re getting a top-notch source of protein.

Because there is so much less protein in ‘chicken’ based foods, companies must boost those levels by adding ‘by products’. Unfortunately, however, although by-products are high in protein, it is a very inferior protein source and not one that is absorbed well by dogs or cats.

Common brands that are ‘meal’ based, with no by-products (top quality):

PRO PAC, Nutro, Royal Canin

Common brands that are ‘chicken’ based and which contain by-products (lower quality):

Eukanuba, Pro Plan, Advance, Hills Science

Interesting isn’t it? By the way, you now know more about petfood ingredients than 90% of vets or pet shop staff, who wouldn’t have a clue what the terms ‘meal’ or ‘by-products’ mean. (The reasons for that are another story but we explain why in our free report which you can get by clicking here.

This explains comments we get all the time, such as this one from Sharon Nel of Wellington:

“The boys are just loving it, and truth be told, I mixed their last few pellets of Hills into the container.  Much to my amusement, they now take little mouthfulls of food out of their bowls, eat all of the Propac and leave the Hills pellets on the floor, not to be touched again….aren’t they funny creatures?”

And of course with the price of Pro Pac being significantly lower than other ‘meal’ based brands, it all adds up to a great deal for your dog or cat and you.
